ここは南カリフォルニアの郊外サンディーマスという小さい町。北にサンゲーブリエル山脈がそびえている。てっぺんはまだ白い。朝から友人が書いた四冊目のチョーサー評論の本の評論を書いていた。とってもおもしろい。お昼しなきゃと思って、午後二時半ごろきりあげてサブウェイに行った。今日も晴れている。お店のなかは顔なじみの若い店員四人と客は私ひとり。しめしめ、いつものピクルスの決着をつけよっ、と考えた。

私の住んでいるロサンゼルス郊外は、とっても静かな町で、八十年代にはまだいちご畑があった。そのころ日本の本はだんだん読まなくなっていたけれど、石川好の「ストロベリーボーイ」が話題になったとき、すこしでも日本語を忘れないようにと思って読んだことがある。読んで六十年代のアメリカ、いちご畑という舞台に興味しんしんとなり、「カリフォルニアストーリー」なども読んで、はてはあの舞台は近所の坂の下だなと直感した。
広大ないちご畑の脇にある坂を下がっていくと、いまでも大きな樫の木が二本生い茂っている。八十年代には、そこに木造の家が二軒建っていて、鶏がかけまわっていた。その畑で、いちごの大きな箱を一度だけ売ってもらったことがある...

The year is 1966. Ocha teacher Sakiko’s household begins to rock as the Beatles’ visit closing in. In the ocha room, she tends to ashes, water and fire. Meantime, the typhoon eye of the Japan’s student movement erupts in a four-and-a-half tatami-mat room. Steam escapes. Sakiko continues to teach ocha.
